Here is a brief introduction to domain name and web hosting. It helps to understand some of the common IT terminology in particular if you are newcomer in this field and you wish to start a career in Internet Marketing.

Domain name and web hosting are closely interlink in the sense that one can’t do without the other. Getting a good domain name that allows you to closely associate with your product or serviced is important in terms of SEO (Search Engine Optimization).

Getting a reliable web hosting is important to ensure people can access your website or blog at anytime of the day and as long as it takes. This is term the up-time.

What is the web?
In a nutshell, the web is a group of computers that are interlink and able communicate to each other via cables, satellite signals and other type of mechanisms.

What is a web server?
Computers can be connected all the time to other computers over the Internet. There are computers that are configured to be connected over the Internet all the time. These are called servers.

Servers are very much like typical computers, the only difference is they are using specialize software and their hardware specifications are higher than typical computers.
Most servers run on two major types of operating systems namely Windows Server or Linux.

Servers are usually equipped with emergency backup power supply, backup secondary storage such as RAID systems and huge amount of on board memories. A web server then basically is just a server that contains websites. When people desire to access these websites through the browsers (Google, Yahoo) the server will send them out.

What is a domain?
A domain name will be the address of your site in the World Wide Web. This must be a unique address. Now to be able to obtain your own unique address you have to purchase it from particular vendors. You might be asking why you need to buy and why you cannot just make your own domain name.

Well the simplest answer for this is that there are companies who are making sure that domain names are unique, they update and take good care of those list and of course they need to be paid for that and that is the very reason why you have to pay when you get your domain name.

The process of applying for a domain name is called domain name registration. There are many companies that offer domain registration services. You should always look for more reputable companies that offer round the clock service and support. ‘wwww.godaddy.com’ and ‘www.namecheap.com’ are among the best-known domain service provider in the market.

Some of these companies provide other services in addition to domain name registration such as email account and even limited small storage space for you to create simple website. When people type your domain name in the web browser, they will be temporary redirected to a any websites where you can put up some information such website under construction and etc.

Now that you have your domain name, your next task will be to put that domain name in a certain server where it can be access by people anytime anywhere as long as they are connected to the Internet. The process of redirecting your domain name from the company that you sign up to obtain the domain name to another server is called domain redirection.

Renting a server is like renting an apartment where you can stay. You need to lease the space. Renting a space in a certain server is called hosting. There are many companies providing this service and they are often called as “hosting companies” for instance hostgator and hostso.com

There are many web hosting companies that offers various hosting packages so to speak. Some of these companies bundle their hosting packages to include other web services such as free website editor, free email accounts, web traffic statistic monitoring and etc. The web hosting pricing varies and you should never sign up based solely on the pricing itself.

There are many companies that offers free web hosting services. You are strongly encouraged not to use free web hosting if you are a serious online business Internet Marketer. Reason being that most free web hosting has lots of restrictions and limitations in terms of what you can or cannot do for instance limited storage space for your websites, limited or no database support and etc.

As a summary, when you build your website, you need to buy your domain name and then find a reputable hosting company where you can save it and have it available to the world wide web users anytime anywhere. There are a lot of companies who are offering both services together, so less troubles for you.

Speaking of the top level domain name since this plays a large role in picking the right domain name for domain name registration; many experts have noted that before you go for a domain name registration, you should identify your top level domain. The .com is the most common top level domain that is used today, for it stands for commercial domains. Of course there are other types and each has its own uses and functions.^-
