Best Location For AdSense – Should You Bother About It

One of the easiest ways to monetize a blog or a website is by selling advertising space.  You can approach advertisers directly or they might contact you if your site has good targeted traffic. If you are just starting out as a novice Internet business owner then it makes sense to consider Google targeted ads on content pages.

One popular question in the mind of most novice webmasters  is in regards on how to  optimize Google AdSense Ads placement so as to achieve highest CTR (Click Through Rate).  There is no hard and fast rule because to certain extent much depends on the website or blog layout.

The best way to determine the ideal location is by tracking user mouse click and movement on your web page.  There are many companies that offers such tracking service for instance Crazy Egg.  It is important to know how a visitor navigate through the various widgets and visualize the eye motion which in turn determine hot spot areas which are more likely to result in  higher clicks.

Another not so sophisticated method to estimate the best spot for the ads is by understanding the interaction between vision and  brain coordination while surfing a website. The norm path of  natural eye movement is from left to right and scanning from top to bottom.

It is observe that ads ‘above the fold’ has higher CTR compare to areas that are obscured and required mouse scrolling or keyboard page up or page down to locate. Ads on the top in the form of a horizontal banner or a leader board are more likely to garner mouse click.  The figure below indicates the heat map spread across a typical website layout.

Best Location For AdSense Based On Heat Map InformationThe areas shaded in red are the best spots to place your AdSense ads. Notice that these locations are mostly 'above the fold' in the sense it is not obscured and there is no need to scroll or pan to view it.

The size of the ads also has some impact on the location and the CTR. It is interesting to note that the top most region (shaded in orange) is less ideal even though it is also 'above the fold'.

One possible reason for this observation is that people are more inclined to associate the top most upper region with advertisement such as a banner. The best way to determine the best location for maximum clicks is through trial and error.

Make use of Google Analytic to monitor your ads performance periodically and do some form of control changes and then split test over and over again until you are satisfied with the result.

 Choose High Value Keywords
Besides determining the best paying locations to insert the Adsense code, you can also further boost your commission publisher income by including high bidding keywords in  your content so as to attract better paying rates. In some cases a low CTR can still yield good profit if the CPC value associated with the ads is high. You should target cost per click of at least one dollar and above.

 Summary

Place your advertisement in positions that will receive highest clicks.  Monitor the performance of  the revenue generating spots.  Change the locations or the keywords if necessary and be consistent in posting quality content . Last but not least, follow the Google Webmaster guidelines and don’t to outsmart the search engines because nine out of ten times you loose.

Couple of days ago someone wrote me an e-mail to express indignation that I had the audacity to publish posts pertaining to search engine optimization (SEO).  That fella whoever he or she points out that my blog Google Page Rank (PR) is  lousy and continue to rant about  how impossible it would be for me to achieve blogging success. Here is excerpt from the email; ‘  People measure a blogger credibility and success through their site’s  page ranking (PR) and in this regards, you fail miserably.’
