The Myth About Website Traffic - The Ugly Truth About Search Traffic

It has been over a month since I last write a post on this blog. Well, I was down with the flu for almost a week and occupied with work the rest of the days.  Every now and then I noticed there are many Internet marketing products launched that target specifically the newbie and novice marketers on how to stay on top of the search traffic for competitive keywords. I think alot of these products are BS and useless.

Okay, you sign up as affiliates for Amazon, Clickbank and other affiliate programs in the hope of getting as many sales commisions as possible. You set up nice websites with proper landing pages and then you thought money will start to roll in. After all, that’s what most of the Internet Gurus would have you believe that making online money is as easy as it can be.

You waited for days and perhaps even weeks and not a single successful sale. You wonder what had gone wrong. As matter of fact you shouldn’t be surprised at all. Why is that so? After all, over 98% of the Internet Marketers and online business entrepreneurs never make it through the 1st 2 years. Shocking isn’t it?

Setting up an e-commerce site is easy indeed. The capital start up cost to establish an online business is dirt-cheap. The hard part though is getting your site to being profitable in relation to the amount of time you invest into it. Online business and Internet marketing is not a get rich quick dream that many Internet Gurus would want you to believe.

The life line of all online business is traffic. Without traffic, your website or blog will just be that, an orphan site with no one noticing it, ever, period. No traffic equals to no visitor and no visitor means no sales and no sales equals to close shop. Traffic alone is not enough though. You need quality traffic, traffic that converts visitors into buyers of your product or service.

The million dollar question therefore is how do you get people to notice and thereafter visit your site? The answer couldn’t be simpler. Majority of people make use of the search engine to locate sites that are relevant to their keyword searches. Therefore you must get your website to rank as high as possible in SERP (search engine result page)

How do you improve and increase your website page ranking? There are two ways to divert traffic to your website as far as SERP is concern. The two methods are 1) Paid search engine marketing and 2) Organic search traffic.

When done correctly, paid search engine marketing can improve and increase traffic to your website very quickly, usually within days. For this post we will talk about paid search engine marketing. In the next subsequent post we will touch upon organic search traffic.

Paid Search Engine Marketing
Firstly, you can subscribe to paid search traffic such as PPC (Pay Per Click) through Goggle Adwords, Yahoo Search Marketing and MSN Ads Center.

PPC is also known as performance based form of advertising because you only need to pay when people click on your ads. You might end up with lots of clicks and no sales if you do not target your ads with the appropriate keywords that draw the right kind of traffic that converts to sales.

The main advantage with paid search traffic is that you can get your site rank highly by the search engines in the shortest possible time if you target the right keywords and outbid others in terms of CPC (cost per click). The main big draw back associated with this method is that you need to spend money before you even make your first sale.

The main disadvantage with paid search engine marketing is that you have to continuously monitor your search campaigns, fine-tune the keywords so as to improve the click through rate of your ads. Traffic to your website and thus your page ranking is affected the moment you stop the paid search traffic campaigns.

Furthermore, you don’t have to worry about backlinks because Goggle in particular no longer take backlinks into consideration when dealing with paid search traffic. You don’t need to put efforts and time into getting quality backlinks even though there is no harm to do so.

You may come across Internet Marketing promotions that boast about eighteen-year-old kids that earns well over 20K grand online by using certain IM strategy and techniques. What these Gurus failed to tell you honestly are the amount of money these people spend on PPC bidding on competitive keywords in order to achieve the high page ranking in SERP. Thus a 20K sales may actually translate to just couple of hundred of dollars net profit after you minus off the advertising cost!

Using PPC As List Building Strategy

List building is a great way to build your online business. The money is in the list. You may have heard this saying in the online marketing world. It is true. It means that the larger your subscriber list is the more money you will make.

The list is contact information you have from the visitors to your website. It is easier to sell to a repeated customer than to a stranger. Once you have someone on your list you can send helpful information to that person and once you have his or her trust you can start selling to him or her.

You can build a huge subscriber list quickly via PPC marketing if you can get your ads to show up for the keywords you are targeting. You can then drive traffic to your landing page through the ads and get the potential prospects and leads to sign up in exchange for free gifts such as e-books.

Using PPC To Increase AdSense Income
AdSense is the counterpart of AdWords. As an advertiser you pay Goggle via PPC AdWords to get your ads display in SERP whereas as a publisher, you get paid when someone click on the AdSense links embedded in your webpage or blog.

Three factors that determine your AdSense income are 1) the amount of traffic to your website or webpage and 2) the click through rate of your AdSense, 3) the cost per click of the keywords that the AdSense is targeting.

So long as the Goggle AdSense income generated is more than what you paid for Goggle AdWords PPC campaigns to drive traffic to your site, you should be fine. As a matter of fact there are some Gurus who are making huge AdSense income through this approach.

Apart from Goggle AdWords, you should also try to diversity paid search traffic to include Yahoo and Microsoft Bing search engines. No doubt Goggle still holds the lion share in terms of search volume, nevertheless there are still signficant searches conducted via Yahoo and Microsoft online marketing channels.

Please checkout Brad Callen’s Goggle AdWords Made Easy e-book. It is not difficult to maximize your returns from PPC Goggle AdWords. You need to continue to refine your keywords and do split testing to eliminate those none profitable campaigns (none optimize and none profitable keywords).

SEO Basic Tips – Keywords

Getting your website to the top of the search engines is crucial for a thriving online business. You may have heard the term keyword research in Internet forums, discussions and etc. First thing first what are keywords? In the most simplistic terms, it refers to words and phrases that user enters into search engines such as Google to search for websites or blogs.

Keyword research is an important aspect of Internet marketing. Suitable keywords and phrases could improve your website visibility, popularity and position within the search engine ranking position. Two factors that is closely associated with keyword research is 1) the number searches per month and 2) the total number of websites with such keywords.

General keywords and phrases are extremely competitive judging by the number searches per month and the number of websites. It gets increasingly difficult to compete against thousands if not millions of websites for keywords or phrases that are extremely popular and in high demand. You can make use of Google Keyword Tool to estimate the volume of search for any keywords.

It is worthwhile for you to invest in some SEO tools to expedite keyword research and website optimization. If you are operating on shoe string budget then fret not. There are many free SEO tools which you can use as well.

One of the keyword research tools that I find very useful is Dave Guindon’s Golden Cash Compass. I did not purchase that software. It came bundle with Virtual Smart Agent which I bought last year. Surprisingly Golden Cash Compass is very easy to use and the help section that Dave’s provided is very informative and excellent.

Does that imply you should totally do away with keyword research and just focus on the article content? I guess not. After all, it is known fact that you should foremost post article with good content for human readership. On the other hand you also need to be mindful that search engine relies on keywords and phrases to categorize your website content.

Search engine optimization is not as difficult as it seems. SEO is pretty much an art as much as it has its underlying functionality deeply rooted in Internet computer science. There are two ways to get your website rank high by the search engines.

The first method involve outbidding competitors for popular keywords in PPC (pay per click) Adwords. Most big online business with deep marketing and advertisement budgets use PPC to garner traffic. PPC Adwords is very attractive from the perspective that you could get your website rank highly within minutes of launching your marketing campaigns.

It is important to note that using PPC Adwords to drive traffic to your website requires constant monitoring and adjustment to keywords and bidding cost. You could lose big time money if you are not careful with PPC. Your website may end up with many clicks but few or no buyers to your products or services.

The alternative method to search engine optimization is through what is term improving organic search traffic to your website. Natural search traffic optimization, also known as organic search improvement involves multiple aspects and requires longer time to take effect.

The positive aspect of focusing on organic search traffic as part of your SEO (search engine optimization) efforts is that the traffic generated is more targeted and you don’t have to spend as much money as PPC Adwords to bid for completive keywords.

Here’s a couple of simple tips to improve ranking of your website

Optimize Your Title Tag
The title tag goes between the head tags and looks like this:

<title>Your Title Here</title>

Make sure your main keyword appears once or twice in the title. If you have a secondary keyword, put both of them in the title. Don’t have any keyword more than twice as it might be construed by search engine spiders as keyword stuffing and your site might get blacklisted or even worst still ban completely by the search engines.

Optimize Your Site

There are many other factors that are important for on site optimization. Two of the big ones are your header tags and your keyword density.

Use <h1> for your headers. In between them, make sure you mention your keyword at least once.

Use your keyword often in your text, but make sure the keywords and phrases blends naturally with the content. If in doubt, read out loud the content with keywords and if it sounds funny then probably its not optimize properly.

These two factors have an influence on Google, but not nearly to the same degree as before simply because people abused the system.

Get Quality Back links

The next step is to get good back links from sites that are related to yours. There are many ways to do this. Here are some of them:

• Submit free press releases
• Offer to write articles for other sites in exchange for a back link.
• Pay for it. (Make sure you are paying services which are using non black hat methods )
• Submit your site to directories
• Link to them and ask them to link back. ( A one way back link is more valuable though)
• Post comments on related blogs (This is one of the most effective way to increase back link)
• Etc

Be creative. Come up with ways to get back back links to your site. Focus on one particular technique to get quality back links. For instance, if you decide to write articles for other sites than by all means put efforts and focus to write and submit as many articles as possible.

Optimize Your Anchor Text

If you can, ask the website owners who’re linking to you to create their link with good anchor text. A good anchor text is a link that has your keyword in it, rather than just click here.

For example, if you’re selling GPS:

Bad: *Click Here* To learn About GPS

Good: Click This Link to *Learn About GPS Workshops*

Where ** = The Link Text

If you select your keywords carefully, optimize your title, your h1 tags and your keyword density, get quality back links and optimize your anchor text, you’ll be far, far ahead of your competition.

In fact, you now know more about how to get your website to rank well in the search engines than most web masters on the Internet. Now it’s time to put this knowledge to use and really see the results. What you learned here can literally double your business overnight.

Google AdSense – In A Nutshell

There are many ways to monetize your blog. One of the easiest and fastest way albeit not the most lucrative way to earn money through blogging is by implementing Google Adsense. What is AdSense?

In a nutshell AdSense is an interesting advertising concept that was initiated by Google many years ago. No doubt there are many new online business advertising models or strategies being conceptualize and implemented as of late. AdSense continues to be a a favourite advertising method and one of the easiest way in terms of blog monetization.

AdSense is one of Google’s main advertising program. It presents monetization opportunity to the website owners by allowing Google to post either text or image advertisements on their websites. The advertisement placed on the website is context sensitive in the sense that the advertistment is selected based on the topics and contents of the webpage or blog displaying it. Google has indicated plans to enhance AdSense by targeting ads based on the user surfing behavior. This is term behavioral advertising.

The entry requirement for Website owners to participate in AdSense is pretty straightforward and easy. Website owners need to enroll to the AdSense program through Google’s AdSense website. Google AdSense program requires you (the website owner & who is also designated the publisher) to include a piece of code (usually a programming script) on your website.

You have the full flexibility to include the AdSense code anywhere in the html code of your website i.e. depending on where you want to position the advertisements (however, there are certain rules that you must strictly follow while pasting this scripting code in other to conform to Google AdSense terms and conditions!).

The piece of AdSense code generated determines the structure of advertisements and content (and this is what helps Google in floating the advertisements on your website). You can choose different setting of advertisement and types such as banner, buttons, square, mixture of text and images and etc.

When people visit your website they are able to see these advertisements. Your earnings are based on how many Google Ads are displayed on your website and also based on how many times visitors to your website actually click on one of those Ads. The Google AdSense system calculates your revenue on per-click (CPC) and per-thousand-Ads-displayed (CPM) basis. The latter is also known as impressions.

For people who want to advertise their products and services through the Google AdSense system, it’s just a matter of signing up through Google Adwords program and letting Google know how much they want to spend towards advertising through Google AdSense. I was extremely confused and could not really differentiate between Google Adwords and Google AdSense when I first started online business.

Well, in a nutshell Google Adwords is targeted at advertisers who wish to have their ads placed on websites, blogs and search engine results listings while Google AdSense is targeted at publishers (web site owners and blog owners) who allows Google to place advertisement on their sites. As advertisers you need to bid for keywords and pay Google while as publishers you get paid when someone click on the Ads.

These businesses can specify the limit and Google AdSense system will accordingly serve their Ads so as to ensure that the specified limit is not crossed. Google AdSense increases the visibility of their business/ services and also increases traffic going to their website; hence fulfilling their purpose of advertising.
